I'm an amateur photographer based in the city of São Carlos, São Paulo state, SE Brazil. I used to make photographs since I was about 15-17 years old. My first camera was a Olympus Trip, an analogue camera. Many years after that I switched to several digital cameras. Presently I own a Nikon D500 with a small set of lenses and a Fujifilm X100T 23mm. A few years after my retirement as an university professor, after teaching Environmental Chemistry at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) for 45 years, I decided to invest money and time dedicating myself more seriously to photography. I´ve taken on-line courses as well as I´ve participated to various photography festival across Brazil. By far, my biggest interest is street photography. And in it, I'm interested in portraits, everyday street scenes and architecture.

“Profound Brasil” – In it, what you find yourself, are very simple people, but very rich in the soul. Rich for giving themselves to the maximum and in an extremely spontaneous and true way. They are also devoted to the intense dialogues and open smiles. They are sincere and authentic. Perhaps all this richness signifies the main virtues of these people who are estranged, isolated, body and soul (and by personal choice), from the great cities and their customs and ( many) mass addictions. The faces of men and women of the field

This is a subproject derived from my ongoing project called “RURALS”.

I want with this subproject to show the faces of rural workers, men and women, that I have been photographing for about 4 years. In some ways this subproject is like a record for the posterity of what rural workers were like in my adult years.

Unfortunately this is a record of the present times that does not include my time as a child and adolescence. But I will continue on this road in this project until the day my fingers can no longer press the shutter button on my cameras.

Love Inscriptions

Oh the love! With so many ways to be expressed.
In Brazil – and I believe in other countries too – there is, as a tradition, to record it through inscriptions or engravings made (with some sharp object) on tree trunks. Let us be indignant at what is happening to the largest rainforest in the world. With what these abominable actions of the Brazilian federal government are proposing for the future of this forest.

What is going further in photography?

This is a question that is always in my head, in my mind.
If I have to answer this question quickly, I would say: “To go beyond photography is to be (to try to be)” a Josef Koudelka “in my life here on earth.”
Just to say something about this great photographer’s magnificent photography: I am struck by his ability to make use of empty spaces in his frames. But there is so much more to say about Koudelka’s photography, and I may not be the best person to say. I leave this to other great masters!

 

Credit your creative artistic evolution

For me there is no separation between photography and life. Both go hand in hand. Parodying the great Brazilian poet Ferreira Gullar (“art exists because life is not enough”) I would say that “photography exists because life is not enough”.

Even on days when you don’t feel so inspired photography can enhance your day. Just before you open your camera’s diaphragm, open your head, your mind. Pleasant surprises always come to you.

Photographs: tree trunks of cut trees on the University of São Paulo campus at São Carlos (SP Brasil; the city where I live). These were very old trees that the university administration decided to cut them down to avoid risk to people.

These shots were made with my little Lumix LX100II using the dynamic monochrome setting. Shots were post processed.
